Why you should update your headshot.

For most people updating your headshot is an inconvenience when you’re trying to focus on your income producing business.  It is one of those “gotta do soon, but never get around to it” tasks.   Yet it is so very important to think of it as one of the keys to opening your business doors to your clients.  It truly is one of your most important First Impression touchpoints for your business/service. 

Keeping up-to-date headshots (for your website, social media and print marketing material) should be obvious.  But it is often overlooked. 

In general, we naturally make observations and initial judgements within seconds of our interaction with others.  Consider how important it is for a receptionist to look professional and exude friendly confidence.  Your headshot (in your online profiles, on your business card, etc) will elicit an unconscious judgement of anyone who sees it.  It is up to you to provide an image that conveys the qualities you wish to present.   Embracing this concept allows you to be proactive in providing that all-important first impression. 

The photographer you choose should be professional and experienced in collaborating with you to identify the impression you wish to convey to your public.   Don’t re-invent the wheel.  Let your photographer guide you through clothing choices, poses, backgrounds and lighting.  Giving yourself time to try a couple of outfits and backgrounds will prove to be invaluable in nailing that image you will be proud to use professionally for the next year.
